Welcome to How to Clean Upholstery.
My name is Doug Holloway and I have been cleaning upholstery since 1982.
I am also a qualified industrial chemist .
This means I know how to clean upholstery, the different types of fabrics, different cleaning processes and chemicals and how to remove a wide range of different stains.
Having seen many attempts to clean upholstery and stains and the results of this, I would always recommend employing a good quality upholstery cleaner. However I appreciate this is not always possible so I will also recommend some DIY procedures and chemicals you could use, all on the proviso that you are 100% responsible for the cleaning you carry out. Please go to the DIY upholstery cleaning page.
The first and most important step is to identify the type of upholstery fabric your sofa or chair is made of. There are too many different types to list, some are easily wet cleanable, some wet cleanable with care and others should be dry cleaned. Choosing the wrong method can ruin your upholstery.
Then there are leather suites, lots of different leather finishes and also the fake or 'faux' leathers. It is very important that real and fake suede are not confused as they are cleaned in a very different way, getting it wrong will ruin the suite.
The next step is what level and type of soiling is present and what type of stains. Stain removal is a massive subject and depends on a wide range of factors. The type of stain is obviously important buts it's removal is also strongly influenced by the type of fabric.
Upholstery cleaning is at the complicated end of the cleaning spectrum and is best left to professionals, if you would like me to recommend someone in your area, then please ring 01702 473700 , email doug@cleanupholstery.co.uk or go to the contact us page .
One of the most important aspects of upholstery cleaning is the type of detergent used to clean, some will cause colour bleeding, some rapid resoiling and some just will not clean very effectively.
Another important area is the type of equipment used to clean your sofas and other upholstery, we have both a super powerful truckmounted cleaning system and a powerful portable machine for secure offices and other difficult to reach places. Areas covered include East London, Essex, Kent, Hertfordshire, Middlesex, Brentwood, Billericay, Basildon, Chelmsford, Harlow, Southend, Margate, Canterbury, Ashford, Maidstone, Faversham, Barnsley,North London, Birmingham, West Midlands, and Worcestershire.
I clean upholstery for some of the most prestigous companies in the City of London.
